Stage 1
Martigny - Martigny
Stage 1 stays mainly on the Rhone Valley roads to and from Martigny. Three circuits to the north-west cross a category 3 La Passe climb. After following the Rhone to an intermediate sprint in Saxon, the peloton hits the first major climb of the week: Ovronnaz, a 12km ascent averaging 9.1%. From the summit there are 33km remaining - mostly descent - back to Martigny, where a reduced bunch sprint is the expected outcome.

When to tune in
The Ovronnaz climb at 12km 9.1% is a serious climber's test. GC contenders can use it to drop rivals, but 33km of descending gives reduced-group pure climbers a tough task to hold off the bunch. Expect a fast finish in Martigny from a group of 20-40 riders.
